Rep. West part of veterans cleanup effort
November 17, 2011|
DON CRINKLAW Foum Publishing Group
U.S. Rep. Allen West was a guest this past Saturday when Rebuilding Together Broward County joined up with the Rotary Club to help remodel Robert Lyons' kitchen.
"Rebuilding Together asked me to come and be a part of this," West said, just after pulling up on his motorcycle in front of Lyons' home on Northwest 17th Street in Fort Lauderdale. "This is the type of thing I believe we Americans — and our civic organizations — have to do.
"Here's a man who served his country in Korea," West said. "My father served in World War Two. My older brother was wounded in Khe Sahn. So I'm close to something like this that helps and respects our veterans."
Power equipment roared inside Lyons' home, as volunteers began dismantling the old kitchen. The walls were going next.
"It isn't often I get to smash things," West said.
Lyons' Korean service qualified him for help from the both groups seeking to honor area veterans this past weekend. Lyons is a homeowner "who lives on a fixed income of Social Security and perhaps VA benefits," said Sandra Einhorn, executive director of Rebuilding Together.

By Scott Fishman, Forum Publishing Group
Local companies and organizations competed in a series of construction-themed events during the annual Rebuilding Together Olympiad and Family Festival at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds in Davie.
Teams of four battled in such events as the Toilet Seat Toss, the Tool Toss, the Wheelbarrow Derby and Building Character, which requires a group effort in constructing something creative using a set of materials.
The annual fundraiser benefits Rebuilding Together Broward County, which provides home repairs and safety upgrades to low-income homeowners.
"I always say that once a team shows up, they are coming back every year," said Sandra Einhorn, the group's executive director. "… It's one of those things that you have to see it to believe it."
Dodie Keith-Lazowick, president of Keith & Associates, was proud of her team, which took home the coveted Hard Hat trophy.

Hollywood Military Family Gets House Makeover By The Dolphins
By Andy Kent
Posted Dec 27, 2011
In a scene similar to ones shown on the popular television series, “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” the normally quiet Hollywood neighborhood on Pierce Street became a bustling center of activity Tuesday.
Leslye Lea’s neighbors had to wonder what all of the fuss was about in front of her 33-year-old house as television trucks were set up to capture something special. Lea, who lives in the house with her 16-year-old daughter, Ashley, and her 79-year-old mother, Evelyn, was chosen by Rebuilding Together to have her home renovated. Scores of people dressed in orange Special Teams shirts representing the Miami Dolphins Foundation and Special Teams Program driven by Chevy took over Lea’s property with hammers and paintbrushes. Dolp hins tight end Anthony Fasano helped out along with wide receiverBrian Hartline, cornerback Will Allen, safety Tyrone Culver, kicker Dan Carpenterand defensive lineman Ryan Baker.
