Check out our photos and videos from project day. Thank you to Sears Holdings for supporting our veterans.

In 2009 Steve Nieves was diagnosed with a rare and incurable form of blood cancer called Mantle Cell Lymphoma. Doctor's believe this was due to his exposure to Agent Orange while he was in Vietnam. Mr. Nieves served our country with the United States Army in the 1960’s and spent 8 months in Vietnam. Mr. Nieves' wife, Carmen Nieves, also suffers with disabilities and illnesses.

The Nieves' have lived in their 50 year old home for the last 16 years and have never had the discretionary income to neither perform necessary minor home repairs nor modify the home to accommodate the couple’s disabilities. Their primary concern is that of having no heat during the brief cold snaps in Florida as well as suffering from the overwhelming heat and humidity year round without any working air conditioning unit. The situation is compounded with the the old windows in the home, many of which are broken and in need of replacement due to its poor insulation and allowing the weather elements and insects to creep into the home on a regular basis, which causes further health implications to Mr. Nieves already fragile immune system. This causes Mr. Nieves to suffer even more between his chemotherapy treatments when he is supposed to be resting and regaining his strength to spend time with his 4 children and 7 grandchildren
.

There are several safety issues and minor home repairs which need to be addressed to allow the Nieves family to live safely and comfortably. His home has become his sanctuary as he undergoes innovative treatments for his lymphoma and wishes for nothing more than to recuperate in a home that is comfortable and sanitary.

Heroes at Home is a program Sears Holdings has created in partnership with Rebuilding Together in response to an urgent need to assist military families facing hardship. By providing necessary repairs or adaptations to homes, Sears Holdings strives to improve the lives of military families across America. Heroes at Home is one of the many initiatives through which Sears Holdings acknowledges the sacrifice made by our troops every day in the line of duty, while supporting and honoring those heroes who remain at home.

Thanks to our wonderful partnership with Heroes at Home, Rebuilding Together has received a grant to help out the Nieves family! Our plans include providing them with a complete new air conditioning unit, fixing/replacing all of their broken windows, landscaping, painting, and adding grab bars in necessary places to make their daily activities more safe and convenient.

We are honored to be a part of this project and we cannot wait to get started! Thanks again Heroes at Home!
