Rebuilding Together National
In 1973, a small group of people in Midland, Texas, realized a growing need in their community.
Homes in their community had fallen into disrepair and their neighbors could not afford to fix them on their own. The group volunteered their time and skills to rehabilitate the homes of their neighbors. Realizing the potential impact of this work, the group formed Christmas in April, with the intent of performing repair and rehabilitation work in their community every April.
News of the group’s good work spread slowly, but eventually achieved national recognition. The mission spread beyond the idea of providing service once a year in April to bringing together partners from all walks of life to help our neighbors year-round. We became Rebuilding Together and opened the national office in 1988.
Today, Rebuilding Together has grown into a premier nonprofit community revitalization organization.
Together, with our corporate and community partners, we repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. Rebuilding Together’s local affiliates and nearly 100,000 volunteers complete about 10,000 rebuild projects nationwide each year.
Rebuilding Together Broward County
In early 2000, two leading and community-minded companies in Broward County, AutoNation (Wayne Huizenga) and JM Family Enterprises (Jim Moran), asked Leadership Broward Foundation to introduce and lead the National Rebuilding Together Day in Broward County on April 29, 2000.
Each year during 2000-2003, the volunteer lead organization hosted a National Rebuilding Day in April and 6-7 homes were revitalized through the involvement of over 120 volunteers and 20 plus project sponsors.
In early 2003, executives within Leadership Broward Foundation had decided that Rebuilding Together could and should become more than a once a year event. This mission had the potential to become a stand-alone affiliate and provide year-round assistance to low-income homeowners and to needy non-profit facilities.
In June 2003, Rebuilding Together Broward County, Inc. officially became an independent 501(c)(3) affiliate of Rebuilding Together, Inc and began providing year-round services for homeowners and communities in need.
Since its inception, Rebuilding Together has made immediate, long-term, and significant health and safety repairs to nearly 850 homes, changing the lives of more than 2,200 individuals. The retail value of Rebuilding Together services is estimated at more than $7,500,000 based on financial donations, volunteer labor, and donated materials and supplies offered by dozens of local businesses and companies.
